No Infrastructure, No Economic Development

The more developed a country's infrastructure, the more developed that country's economy is.

  • “Modern infrastructure is the backbone of an economy and the lack of it inhibits economic growth…”
  • “investing more funds without tackling inefficiencies would be like pouring water into a leaking bucket. Africa can plug those leaks through reforms and policy improvements which will serve as a signal to investors that Africa is ready for business.”
In order to develop a nation's economy and to encourage the growth of profit-making industries, there are five major infrastructure systems key to economic success:  power, water, transportation, information and communication systems, along with a well developed educational system.  All of which most African nations lack.

Your comment on twitter today about Ghandi says it all. One person can make a difference. One of his quotes really sticks with me:
"Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it." It removes all excuses for not doing something.

Your post about infrastructure is relevant. The basics must be in place for a healthy economy to even have a chance to take root. I'm also a big fan of the microfinance work done by Mohammad Yunus (he wrote a great book called "Banker to the Poor"). He proposes that one piece of ending poverty is to provide low or no interest loans to people so poor they can't even get a bank account-to encourage entrepreneurism. He's shown that there is an incredibly low default rate on these loans. It isn't the entire solution, but it does provide on piece of the puzzle. :D
